Wi-FiWhen you connect to Wі-Fi networks on Android devices, you might come across problems. We want to show how to perform Wi-Fi troubleshooting on Android devices or the router to which you want to connect.

What situations will be considered?

We will consider problems of connecting to a home router, as in this case it is possible to configure both your router and your mobile device.

Solving problems when connecting to the router

There are situations when Android cannot connect to an access point, and you see only the words “getting the IP address” on the display of your smartphone.

If before there were no problems and you used the same devices, try to connect any other device having Wі-Fi module to the network. If it connects successfully, then the problem is in your Android, if not, then you need to configure the router. Once you figured out which device has a problem, we simply recommend to restart that gadget.Perhaps there was some minor fault in settings.

Note: instead of turning off your smartphone, you can simply activate the airplane mode, and then return to the normal mode. This will shut down all communication modules and re-activate them, which is what happens when you reboot the device. This will help to save time.

If these steps did not solve the problem, we offer to do the following:

Problems with authentication

If after trying to connect, you see a message “authentication error” and then “turned off”, try to re-enter the password from the network, because that status indicates the dissimilarity of the specified password with what you entered on your phone.Keep in mind that the password is case-sensitive.

Installing third-party utilities

One of the easy solutions to fix problems with Wі-Fi is to install the “Wі-Fi Fixer” app; it is available for free in the Google Play. To use it, you do not need to understand its functions, it is just enough to download and launch it, and then you can hide it. All the basic functionality of the application works automatically; the utility corrects system parameters for a successful connection to the access point, provides good signal, struggles with persistent gaps, and corrects the causes of these failures.

Changing the channel

We recommend trying to change the channel on which your router broadcasts.Perhaps, other wireless networks have appeared near you, so problems can occur if channels of different networks coincide. In such a situation, one device can successfully connect, while other cannot. In this case, you must change the settings using the PC that is connected to the access point by cable or via Wi-Fi. To do this:

  1. Open any browser installed on your PC
  2. In the address line, write 192.168.1.1. and press «Enter».
  3. If you are prompted for a user name and password, write «admin» in both fields.

After that:

On theTP-Link:

  1. PressWireless.
  2. Then,WirelessSettings.
  3. In the window that opens, in the “Channel”, try to change the number to any other.

On the Asus:

  1. Go to the “Advanced settings”.
  2. Then go to “Wireless networks”.
  3. In the window that appears, in the “channel”, change the number to another.

Note: no matter what is the firm of the access point, after changing the number, save the settings and restart the router, and then try to connect. We recommend trying a few different options for the channel number.

Setting the proxy server

We advise you to check the proxy settings on Android, as in most cases, its setting should not be set manually. To do this, go to the menu of the smartphone and do the following:

  1. Open the settings.
  2. SelectWi-Fi.

    Settings LG

  3. Make a long tap on the name of your connection.

  5. Tick “Show additional options”

  6. Make sure that it writes “No” under the “Proxy server”.
  7. Also, we advise to pay attention that the «DНCР» must be chosen under the “IP settings”.

    No

  8. After these steps, enter the password for your network, and press the “Save” button.

Changing the standard

Changing the standard of Wі-Fі on a router can help to troubleshoot the Wi-Fi on Android. The fact is that the smartphone may not support some of the standards, so it cannot successfully connect to the network. For this, we offer the following changes on the example of theTР-Link:

  • Follow steps 1 to 5, as described in the “Changing the channel” paragraph.

In the «Mode», try to change settings “11bonly”or “11gonly”, “11n only”; after every change, click «Save» and try to connect yourAndroiddevice, in order to try all options.

Additional advices

Here are a few tips on how to troubleshoot Wi-Fi connection problems.

You can try to change the regional settings on the router; some Android devices, especially made by lesser-known producers, may be sensitive to this. For this:

  • Follow steps 1 to 5, as described in the “Changing the channel” paragraph.
  • Change the «Region» to the region that you are really in now.

    Region

We also encourage you to try to check if your phone works with other open Wі-Fi routers. However, keep in mind that this method should not be regarded as the main indicator, because even if the mobile device is working properly, it may still cannot connect because of some settings on the router. These settings include the protection of MAC addresses or disabling the automatic distribution of IP addresses. In this case, the entire stage will dwell on the “Getting IP address” message.
